Sunrise on Mountain Pond - Bartlett, New Hampshire

A fantastic place to camp or just be there for sunrise, Mountain Pond. A great short walk from the road, a perfect spot to take in the fall foliage, or walk the 2.7 mile loop around the pond.

Kearsarge Firetower

Perch high above North Conway, with a commanding view of the White Mountains, this little firetower is great spot to take in the views, and if you've got the time enjoy a sunset.

Mount Washington Road Race 2009

On assignment - There could not have been a better day for running to the summit of Mount Washington. About a mile from the finish spectators and runners were treated to a gorgeous "undercast" putting the finish line high above the clouds. Truly a climb to the clouds.

New Hampshire Waterfall Photography Workshop

June 27th, in conjunction with The Buttonwood Inn, I will be teaching a half-day Waterfall Photography workshop. It will start at the Buttonwood Inn for an early breakfast. Then right out to a nearby waterfall for a jam packed morning of making photographs and learning how to make better ones. Mountain Biking Season has Arrived

Well after patiently waiting for the snow to melt and the trails to dry here in New Hampshire, it is finally prime time for mountain biking. Not far from me is a great network of single track that provides loads of opportunities for great photography. Wide open hemlock groves, winding switchbacks, rugged rocks and roots. Once the leaves pop out the backdrops will get even better.

Well there's still snow in some shady patches but now it's time to get on with Spring. Trail running, mountain biking, rock climbing, all the good things that come with the warm sunshine.

Nope, definitely not. The water temperature is too cold so the fish are lethargic at best. Why not give it a try anyway, at least the sun is shining and the air temp is up to 45.

Back from Florida

Just spent a week in sunny Florida with the family. Lots of cool rides and theme parks. Here's where I spent some time so I could keep up with the endless energy my two boys had. Now it's back to the snow and cold.

New York City

Just got back from New York City. I was selected to be included in the "32nd Small Works Exhibition". It was great to be there, but it's great to be back. I was able to catch up with some friends while in the city. I had a great lunch with David Ferris, freelance writer, at "The Stage Deli" where I ate too much pastrami. Be sure to check out David's Blog, www.ayearinnewyork.com . I was also able to shoot some photos of my sister practicing ball room dancing.

Running in the Winter

Not sure why Kevin Tilton likes running so much, but he does. After running a bit of a warm up on the roads, Kevin went out for an hour long snowshoe. Here he is on a newly plowed road not far from home.

Traveling around NH in the winter

It's always interesting to travel through the NH summer vacation hot spots during the winter months. No traffic, lots of closed up shops. Plenty of peace and quite, which is probably why most people started coming up the the lakes and mountains of New Hampshire.

Deep into winter on Mt. Washington

Yeah, it night be still in the 50's at your house, maybe even grass showing on the front lawn. Here in North Conway my driveway has got 3 inches of snow and ice on it. Last week a quick afternoon trip to Tuckerman Ravine brings winter back in to focus. It's here until sometime in late June, or July.

Trail running season in New Hampshire

There is a time between late October and early December that is devoid of any interesting outdoor activities. The warm sun of late autumn has long since faded although a few of the hardest of men and women still scrap out a few hours here and there. The ice has yet to build to a thickness that makes any kind of sense to climb. So what is left to do, is run, if you can do it with a bright orange vest on. Enjoy, the last of fall, winter is coming.

Every year it happens, kids go back to school, there a certain calm settles over the mountains, and valleys. Then the tour buses, rubberneckers, and slow moving gauwkers come to town. This year, even with the dire predictions of global warming ruining the intensity of the fall foliage, they come, and will not be disappointed.

Sometimes we(Climbers), all forget why we climb. Take a kid climbing and you will be quickly reminded - because it's fun. Here is Alex an eight year old, no fancy $100 Prana bouldering shorts, or the latest ninja-like footwear, just whatever he was wearing at school today. It's Fun!

Union Warf - Portland, Maine

This fisherman just pulled up to the dock and started unloading fish, less than a few hours old. They got loaded into plastic containers with ice, thrown on the back of a pick-up and driven a block to the fish market. Now that's fresh fish. I went with the fish tacos, with a chili sauce and coleslaw....

Open Water Swimming in Crystal Lake, NH

Brian Johnston finishing up a half-mile swim in Crystal Lake, a pristine New Hampshire Lake in Eaton, NH. Brian, his wife Anna and two month old daughter Myra enjoy swims a few days a week, often with Loons paddling around somewhere on the lake. No, Myra's not swimming quite yet, but I'm sure she won't be far behind Mom and Dad.
