Morgan Butters eyeballing the pull-up bar during "Murph".
The real deal, no models, no lighting, no faking it. Here’s a glimpse into a cross-fit gym, normal people getting after it and getting in shape. Real and authentic is a buzzword in photography lately. Everyone wants models to look like everyday people doing real things. Earlier this summer I shot a yearly event the local box puts on to honor Murph. A Murph is done in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, age 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.
Here’s what the workout is, One Mile Run + 100 Pull-ups + 200 Push-ups + 300 Air Squats + One Mile Run pulled from the Cross-fit site. This workout was one of Mike’s favorites and he’d named it “Body Armor”. From here on it will be referred to as “Murph” in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.
Partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Start and finish with a mile run. If you’ve got a twenty pound vest or body armor, wear it.” All ages, male, female, young and old working out and running together is about as real as it gets. Thanks to all the participants for allowing me into their space and letting me see them beat up, sweaty and tired
